One of the biggest accomplishments in life is to fall madly in love with yourself.
Not in a superficial, artificial, narcissistic way, because that’s not real love. But true love, in every shape and every form. Falling deeply in love with every part of you – good, bad, ugly and unchangeable – is really hard.
But it’s everything.
It’s the most important relationship you’ll ever have. But most of us don’t pay attention to it because we’re too focused on feeling it elsewhere. We don’t look within, because we’re too afraid of what we’ll find.
But the truth is, you have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. Otherwise, the love you give another is in place of the love you owe yourself… not in addition to it. And that fractioned affection isn’t good for anyone.
There isn’t an easy fix or simple solution. It takes some work. I’ve learned that it starts with Intention (the decision to do), then comes to life with Awareness (self awareness of who you are, what drives you, what you’re proud of, what you regret) and blossoms with Acceptance (accepting the things you can’t change, and changing the things you can).
When you get those 3 things in place, then the love affair can begin.
Love yourself first.
Everyone else comes next.
Happy Valentines Day.
